A record 1.96 million head of cattle were placed in feedlots in December. That’s six percent above the December 2020 total. The number of cattle and calves on feed totaled 12 million head on January 1. That’s one percent higher than one year ago and is the second highest January total since this series of reports began in 1996. USDA estimates marketings at 1.8 million head, up slightly from one year ago.
