A newly discovered gene called ARG1 was discovered by a team at Purdue University. The gene found in sorghum plants offers broad protection from the fungal disease anthracnose, rust and target spot. While some natural resistance to fungal disease was previous known in sorghum, specific genes that offer such widespread resistance against multiple strains of anthracnose has not been identified until now.
