University of Minnesota Entomologist Ian MacRae says insect population increases during dry, warm weather. The rapid spurt in population is because the insect body thrives in heat and will grow quicker, therefore consuming more energy. “If we end up with a dry spring this year, you can expect to battle grasshoppers once again. Any of the insects that were high in population at the end of last year are the ones that are predicted to thrive in the event of dry weather going into 2022.”
