A deep political divide increases the gridlock in Washington. National Cattlemen’s Beef Association President-Elect Don Schiefelbein says that division can also be found in agriculture. “That is what keeps me up at night,” said Schiefelbein. “We’re just two percent of the population and yet we can’t seem to align ourselves. When you look at the issues, we align tightly on 95 percent of the issues, but when we’re talking out in the public we end up talking about the five percent we don’t agree on.” Without a unified message, Schiefelbein says it difficult to get things done at the state and federal level. “They don’t want to play referee on the internal bickering.” Schiefelbein is part of a family cattle business at Kimball, Minnesota and will take over as president of the NCBA in 2022.
