Due to the pandemic, USDA extended the beef checkoff referendum petition drive until October 3. The original deadline was in July. North Dakota Beef Commission Chairman Mark Voll says this is a crucial vote. “This is an up or down vote and if people remember back to the 70s and 80s, getting the checkoff done was a major, major task,” said Voll. “The danger is if the checkoff ends, it is not just going to start up again. When we reflect back on all the great things the checkoff has done, the discussion of ending it is puzzling to me.” The national beef checkoff rate is $1 per head sold. That money is invested in promotion, research and market development.
