The University of Minnesota Extension’s Crops and Soils Day begins with the small grains program. University of Minnesota Wheat Breeder Jim Anderson this year’s drought conditions have been a challenge for advancing wheat varieties. “Our trials are probably going to be a little larger next year, because we can’t cut as many things this year. We could still go through with the varieties of wheat planned, but it’s the process of advancing experimental lines,” explains Anderson. “It’s hard to cut something, because it didn’t have a great yield year relative to others and it may only be a few bushel different. You’d like to give it a good chance in a good year before cutting it.” Barley breeder Kevin Smith outlined hull-less barley and progress on the two row barley program. Hear more in this story.
