CN appears to be the big winner in the tug-of-war between Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railroads. Both companies have been trying to acquire Kansas City Southern Railway and become the first railroad to extend from Canada to Mexico. The Kansas City Southern board of directors has accepted CN’s $33.6 billion offer. There was a previous agreement between CP and Kansas City Southern. As a result, KCS will now pay a $700 million breakup fee to Canadian Pacific. The Surface Transportation Board still needs to weigh in on this massive railroad merger.
