According to USDA, the number of cattle on feed in May 1 was 11.7 million head. That’s five percent above one year ago and the second highest May 1 inventory since this series of reports began in 1996. The number of cattle on feed in South Dakota increased 15 percent. Minnesota was one of three states with declining cattle inventories, down 15 percent. Nationally, placements were up 27 percent and marketings rose 33 percent.
