What can farmers and ranchers expect from the new federal government being formed? The final results are still being determined in some states where House and Senate races have yet to be decided. National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane says the timeline for Congress looks something like this. “House Democratic leadership should have elections sometime this week,” he says. “December 8 is the deadline for states to document an contested votes. December 14 is the start of the Electoral College delegation process, and the next critical step is January 3; the beginning of the next Congress.” Between now and the new year, there is a lot to do in a small amount of time during the lame duck session of Congress. NCBA Director of Government Affairs Danielle Beck says there are 13 days that both the House and Senate will be in session. “Majority Leader Steny Hoyer indicated that the next COVID-19 relief package will remain a top priority.
