Some sectors of agriculture are disappointed negotiations for the next economic stimulus package are on hold. The HEROES Act 2 would help hog producers a few ways. “The bill would reimburse farms that put down animals because they had no place to go during plant shutdowns in the spring,” says David Preisler, CEO, Minnesota Pork Producers Association. “The legislation would also provide funding for disease diagnostic labs across the country including one at North Dakota State University and the University of Minnesota that we think are important from a disease prevention and protection standpoint and then, there’s language that would have given more flexibility to the agriculture secretary with the Commodity Credit Corporation to deal with unforeseen events.” Preisler says most of Minnesota’s pork packing plants are currently running at 96 to 97 percent capacity and pork demand remains good.
