Near Berthold, North Dakota, Mark Birdsall is in the field working out the ruts from a tough 2019 harvest. “There are lots of tracks made with the combines from last year and the tillage is going pretty well,” says Birdsall. “There’s a few more days of that and then, we’ll start seeding peas and barley.” Weather pending, planting could start next week. Right now, fields are still wet. “The frost is down about 17 to 18 inches. We were so saturated with water, it’s taken longer than usual to get things dried out. It’s the wettest I’ve seen since spring 2011,” explains Birdsall. “The difference this year is we’re starting out so wet. Back then, we got a lot of rain during spring causing prevent plant. We haven’t picked up much moisture this spring, but we’re still extremely full and saturated.”
