In a weekly webinar with NDSU Extension, Crops Economist and Marketing Specialist Frayne Olson reflected on the USDA’s Prospective Plantings report and what the data means for North Dakota. “The expectation is to have 3.2 million acres planted to corn in North Dakota this year. That’s a decline from 2019,” said Olson. “Spring wheat acres are estimated at 6.1 million acres this year; a decline from last year. Surprisingly, North Dakota farmers could plant more soybean acres this year at 6.6 million acres.” Olson said the USDA survey findings are a result of the price relationships farmers saw in the markets as budgets were coming together and an expectation of a spring planting struggle. “I do think some of these numbers reflect all of this information. As we move forward and get more information, we might see minor adjustments nationally and in North Dakota.” Olson reminded farmers to not use the coronavirus as a reason to majorly shift acres.
