If you analyze the latest USDA Cattle on Feed Report by weight class, there is a story to tell. That according to Livestock Marketing Information Center agricultural economist Tyler Cozzens. Placements of 800-pound and more cattle were up three percent. “Keep in mind those cattle will probably come into the market within the first couple months of 2020,” says Cozzens. “The middle weight classes are also up about one percent, which is in-line with what was expected. Cattle weighing less than 600-pounds were up just over 12 percent.” Cozzens goes on to say the drought situation playing out in the Southern Plains is one factor. This is causing producers to push cattle sooner than normal, hence the lighter-weight cattle reflected in this report. Listen to more with Cozzens.
