North Dakota State University Soil Scientist Aaron Daigh says plan now for extra spring field work to manage crop residue, because of the limited fall field work. “If farmers have fields with high amounts of residue on them, they may want to consider planter options.” Daigh recommends thinning the residue with a vertical tillage tool if using a chopping corn head. “A few passes of that just to make it thinner will help out a lot. If farmers had a combine without a chopper head on it with stalks standing, that’s an opportunity to consider strip till. Depending on the planter, they may also be able to no-till with both.”
