NK Seed Agronomist Tiffany Braasch say the high moisture and low test weight corn seen in fields are the result of a tough growing season. “Those two things don’t go hand-in-hand necessarily. It really has to do with more of the stress during grain fill and if we get to the maturity of that hybrid into black layer in addition to other stresses.” Given the later than normal planting and wet growing season, Braasch says this crop never really had a chance to produce. “We had more wet soils, especially to the east and southeast. If you think of a corn root system being wet, it’s not going to grow much. That means the lack of a root system underneath. This can cause nitrogen to get out of the root profile if there’s too much rain. There are so many things that happened this year.” Listen to the story.
