IntelliFarm President Brian Voth says Statistics Canada’s canola production of 18.6 million tonnes is a big surprise. “When I looked at their numbers, they didn’t actually change their yield,” he says. “They dropped yield marginally to a 40 bushel an acre average.” Voth says the biggest change is in harvested acres. “Because of how the harvest went, farmers were supposed to give their best estimate for production that was already harvested and what would be harvested post survey. There’s still a fair amount of acres left in the field in western Manitoba, Saskatchewan and into northern Alberta. A lot of this is canola, with roughly 1.5 million tons left in the field at this point.”
