Waterhemp and marestail were the problem weeds in prevented plant acres this year. NDSU Extension weed specialist Joe Ikley says Palmer amaranth was also found in prevent plant fields seeded to millet. “These were fields that may have had a different crop. Due to prevent plant and later planting, this is where we found Palmer amaranth.” Looking ahead, Ikley is hopeful 2020 will allow farmers a better chance to control weeds. “Hopefully, we can get in fields earlier in 2020 and prevent more seed production for waterhemp and marestail.”
