Sugarbeet farmers from throughout the Red River Valley suffered losses this past season. Minn-Dak Sugar board chairman Pat Freese says those challenges also extend to other U.S. sugarbeet production areas. “It’s not only for (American) Crystal, Minn-Dak and Southern Minn. Other parts of the country have had their struggles, too. Western Sugar, Wyoming and even Amalgamated has had some issues.” Work is underway to include the beet cooperatives in USDA’s WHIP plus program. Freese said Minn-Dak, ACSC and SMBSC are working together on a package that can be presented to USDA. The Minn-Dak annual meeting will be held Thursday in Fargo.
