The Japanese Consumer Affairs Agency is suggesting its approval of food made from gene-edited plants, saying it does not need any special labeling. The U.S. Wheat Associates praised this news, saying gene editing is a safe, efficient way to make targeted improvements in the crop. Gene edited wheat is not available commercially yet, but Calyxt is using the technology to develop high fiber wheat flour. That product could be on the market by 2022.
