Walsh County, located in northeast North Dakota, has been dry for a majority of the summer. That dryness is pushing up the harvest timeline for small grains. “I started harvesting barley on Thursday and surprisingly it’s going very well,” says Lankin, ND farmer Dale Zahradka. “The last rain on that ground was the end of June, so it’s had a tough month or so.” Given the dry conditions, Zahradka says the yield and quality of the barley is surprising. “It was 14.1 percent moisture, 12.2 percent protein and test weight was around 49 pounds.” Harvest Hotline is made possible by U.S. Custom Harvesters, Incorporated, the North Dakota Mill and AgCountry Farm Credit Services.
