Carrying about 460,000 bushels of corn, 115 rail cars left the Pillsbury, North Dakota area last week enroute to the eastern Corn Belt. Fewer corn acres are causing a shortage for business use. The Arthur Companies General Manager Kevin Karel wouldn’t confirm the exact location where those rail cars were headed, but says there will be more corn trains going to Illinois, Indiana and Ohio in the next two to three months. “I think the demand in the east will last 18 months, but I think there will be a temporary suspension during harvest,” says Karel. “I bet next spring and summer we’ll be sending corn east. We’ll be sending corn this year through the middle of October.” Karel says sending grain to the eastern Corn Belt isn’t common. In the short term, Karel says there will be more outlets for North Dakota farmers in a time of challenging basis. Listen to the interview.
