The corn that did get planted near Mitchell, South Dakota needs heat. Chet Edinger farms in the area and says stands are decent. “It all depends on the heat units. The corn that did get in is late and behind schedule,” says Edinger. “If we don’t get the heat units we need, then we’ll have a lot of wet corn to process. Luckily, we have a corn dryer and it will pay off this year.” The Mitchell area received a few inches of rain in the last week. The cool, wet conditions haven’t been terrible for cool season crops like wheat. Edinger has a limited winter wheat crop, due to winterkill. The remaining wheat is thin in spots, but he says it should harvest well. With the later growing season, harvest will be delayed to the end of July. Listen to the story.
