The Minnesota Senate has approved the agriculture and rural development bill. This finance bill includes money for the proposed Soybean Innovation Campus at Crookston. Committee Chairman Torrey Westrom says this plant will provide more crushing capacity for soybean farmers in northwest Minnesota. “That type of innovation and value-added agriculture is what we need to support.” The bill includes funding for premium assistance for farmers enrolling in Dairy Margin Coverage and money to help small dairy farms modernize their infrastructure. The difficult farm economy is also addressed. “You hear some real gut-wrenching stories with farmers in those situations and we want to do what we can.” The ag finance bill will fund the day-to-day operations of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and invest in a broadband initiative.
