The death of animals is apart of any farm and ranch. With lambing and calving underway, now is the time for livestock producers to have a disposal plan. Mary Keena, a livestock environmental management specialist at the NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center, says composting is one option. “Put that site outside of pens in an undisturbed area. Then, start with a two foot bed of base,” says Keena. “The base can be straw, hay, corn stalks, something of that nature. On top of that goes the bulking material, then cover the top with two feet of cover material.” Keena reminds producers that carcass abandonment is illegal in all states. Also, timely disposal is critical in preventing the spread of disease. Hear more of the conversation.
