Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative held its annual meeting this past week in Fargo. Newly-elected board chairman Pat Freese says the 2018 sugarbeet crop averaged just under 27 ton and 16.5 percent sugar per acre. “Mother Nature threw us a curveball at the end of the growing season, which decreased both tonnage and sugars from original estimates,” says Freese. “That’s obviously reflected in grower payments, which were in the upper $20s to lower $30s.” Freese acknowledges there have been facility challenges the past couple years. “We had problems with slicing on a reliable basis. Now that we’re back on track, we plan to increase acres in the 2019 season.”
