From weaning calves to pregnancy checking cows, cattle producers are staying busy this fall. In the midst of it all, harvest is still taking place. As corn harvest progresses, Taylor Grussing, a cow/calf specialist with South Dakota State University Extension, reminds producers to be conscious of down ears when grazing residue. “Try to work your cows into that paddock,” says Grussing. “We don’t want any digestive upset if there is too much corn down in the field. Also, make sure there is adequate salt, mineral and water out on the stalks.” Muddy conditions did delay weaning for some producers, but most have completed the process. Grussing says keeping those calves healthy is the top priority after weaning. Listen to more.
