Based out of Lakota, North Dakota, Huso Crop Consulting owner Mark Huso says spring wheat yield and protein reports vary, depending on rainfall and variety. The 2018 wheat crop average-to-above average for the region. “Certainly varietal differences showed up this year with some stress in the crop,” says Huso. “There was bacterial leaf streak in a few varieties that impacted production, as well as some scab. Ergot has also been found in a few fields, but not enough to affect the sample too much.” Huso expects the majority of wheat harvest to wrap up this week. Farmers in the region will then move straight into canola and pinto bean harvest.
