The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows abnormally to moderately dry conditions in portions of north-central North Dakota, central South Dakota and northwest Minnesota. Due to dry conditions, Badger, Minnesota farmer Shayne Isane says hay cutting has come to a halt. A third cutting may be out of the picture if rain doesn’t come soon. “We’ve had a little over an inch of rain since July 1 and about five inches since planting time.” Forage availability in pastures is also getting tight. If a lack of moisture continues, Isane may have to consider supplementing cattle nutrition with feed. “We’ll have enough feed supply to make it through the winter, but boy could we use a nice soaker to get things going.”
