Beginning August 1, the media will no longer have access to USDA crop and livestock reports before they are released to the public. At the present time, six news services, including the Wall Street Journal, DTN and Reuters, participate in the lockup and are given pre-report access to the reports. The USDA news release describes this as an opportunity for equal access to the market information. The Agriculture Department implied private agents are paying news outlets to get a jump on the market but offered no proof that has happened.
