Grain elevators in the winter wheat areas of the Southern Plains are grading protein content of the wheat this year. Northern Crops Marketing and Investments President Brad Paulson says this may impact the quality premiums and discounts of the spring wheat crop. “Protein in Oklahoma and southern Kansas is pretty high, like 11 of 14. A lot of it’s 12 to 14. That’s going to probably soften the premiums a little bit up here, but it will also make the discounts for a lower protein wheat a little less severe.” Paulson says there has been a lot of selling pressure in the winter wheat areas.
