With the optional units in crop insurance, each farm and crop are insured separately. With enterprise units, all acres of the same crop in the same county are combined. Grand Forks crop insurance agent Norm Enerson says the rates for optional units have gone up, pushing more farmers to the enterprise units. “We’ve seen an increased use of the enterprise units in this area and the reason it is used so much more than optional units is the cost savings with the enterprise units. The optional units have gotten so expensive and RMA should take that into consideration.” Enerson was part of a farm bill discussion hosted by Senator Heitkamp this morning. Enerson believes this change could be handled administratively.
