Sugar policy is typically a point of contention in any farm bill debate. Amenia, North Dakota farmer Bill Hejl expects another battle when the farm bill comes to the Senate floor. Hejl says bipartisan support helped sugar policy move forward without a fight in the House. “Sugar will be a battle again in the Senate.” Heij, who is a member of the American Crystal Sugar Company board of directors, participated in Heitkamp’s farm bill meeting in Grand Forks today and said bipartisanship is needed in Washington. “The coalition in the House was very bipartisan. The chairman of the agriculture committee and the ranking member basically said if you don’t pass this, we’ll scuttle the bill.”
