North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp is optimistic the farm bill will be passed in the Senate before the July 4th recess. “Majority Leader Mitch McConnell does not usually promise things he can’t deliver. He believes he can get it done.” McConnell participated in the farm bill markup and referenced the week of June 25 for floor action. Heitkamp hosted a roundtable discussion with farmers Friday morning near Grand Forks. The ability to move the farm bill to a conference committee was questioned. “They couldn’t get a farm bill that they could all agree upon in the House. There is some thought the House, push comes to shove, will just pass the farm bill passed by the Senate. The fact that (House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member) Collin Peterson has endorsed the Senate farm bill would suggest that is what he is talking about, but you’d have to talk to Collin.” Crop insurance, beginning farmer programs, trade and the farm economy all got attention at the farm bill meeting.
