There is a real threat to animal agriculture from activist organizations. National Milk Producers Federation vice president of sustainability and scientific affairs Jamie Jonker says the labor shortage adds to the problem. “Sometimes a warm body seems like the right thing to do, but we need to make sure we vet each potential employee very carefully. If they seem too good to be true, they probably are too good to be true.” Jonker says activists try to demonize normal production practices. At an Animal Agriculture Alliance event, Jonker said activists are now targeting retail and foodservice markets. “The response is working through our customer channels. It is really about protecting brand integrity.” At the summit, speakers emphasized the need to be proactive and push back against the activist community.
