Dylan McGregor of the McCook Central, South Dakota FFA Chapter received the National FFA Beef Production–Placement proficiency award. McGregor works for his family’s cattle finishing operation, where he helps manage feed purchases and track profitability. “My big focus is making sure that we stay profitable by running our software and making sure our breakevens and pens of cattle are making money,” McGregor said. “Maybe we should sell this. Maybe we should hold this. Maybe we should buy a little extra corn this month because corn’s a little cheaper. That’s what my project is.” McGregor is in his second year studying agricultural business at Mitchell Technical College. “When you show up to work every day, you don’t ever really see the benefits of it,” McGregor said.
