USDA base acres are expanding for the first time since the 2002 farm bill. According to an analysis from the NDSU Agricultural Risk Policy Center, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota collectively will get an additional 7.25 million base acres. That represents 24 percent of the 30 million total base acres being added. North Dakota leads with nearly 2.9 million acres. Minnesota has 2.2 million acres and South Dakota, 2.1 million. Wheat makes up the largest share of North Dakota’s new base acres. Minnesota is split evenly between soybeans and corn. The majority of South Dakota’s additional base acres will be in corn.
