New cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza are impacting turkey flocks across the Northern Plains, raising renewed concerns for poultry producers. According to the USDA APHIS, an outbreak in LaMoure County, North Dakota, has affected 25,500 birds, marking the first commercial flock infection in the state this year. South Dakota continues to see pressure from the virus, with a new case confirmed in Edmunds County impacting 31,600 breeder hens. That brings the state’s total to 9 commercial outbreaks in 2026. In Minnesota, nearly 62,900 turkeys were affected in Big Stone County. This is the first case in that county since 2023, and the first reported infection in the state since January.
