Harvest in south-central South Dakota is progressing slowly but steadily as weather and field conditions vary. Custom harvester David Meissner, who is cutting wheat near Gregory and Winner, says the grain quality has been impressive so far. “What we’ve done so far, the test weights have been well into the 60s, we’re very, very pleased on the test weight side,” said Misener. “Protein on this winter wheat was 15.6 (percent).” Despite dry conditions during planting last fall, yields are also exceeding expectations. “The first field that we did ended up doing a little over 40 bushels, and the farmer was pretty ecstatic with that yield. He thought he’d have to be happy with 20 to maybe 30 bushels (per acre), had another neighbor closer to 60.”
