Recently, Ted McKinney, USDA Under Secretary of Agriculture for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs, led a trade trip to Thailand and the Philippines. In efforts to sell more U.S. agricultural products to the nations, McKinney says no stone is being left unturned. “The nations are very optimistic in terms of products such as wheat, dried distillers grains and pork. Feedback from store owners, managers and even CEOs was to continue negotiations. While the demand for U.S. ag products in both of the nations is high, so are the tariffs. “We’re working to get those down, and I think we made some headway.” McKinney also talked with trade officials about other trade barriers. For example, Thailand is still not importing chilled or frozen turkey from the U.S. due to the bird flu outbreak two years ago.
