DFL’er Tim Walz will succeed Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton. Walz, who has represented Southern Minnesota in Congress since 2007, defeated Republican Jeff Johnson with a vote of 54 percent to 42 percent. Walz is a member of the House Agriculture Committee and has experience in the military and as a teacher. Walz will be working with a divided legislature. The DFL regained control of the House by flipping many of the districts in the suburbs of the Twin Cities. Representative Melisa Hortman of Brooklyn Park, who is expected to be the next speaker of the Minnesota House, said her caucus’ top priorities will include health care and clean air and water. The Republicans were able to maintain the majority in the Minnesota State Senate.
