A group of researchers at the University of Minnesota have been experimenting with adding red seaweed to dairy cattle diets to help reduce methane emissions. Animal Science Professor Brad Heins said the results were seen almost immediately. “We found that we can reduce methane emissions by 20 to 40 percent in lactating dairy cows over a six-month time period,” said Heins. “Just a little bit of seaweed, maybe an ounce per cow per day, added to their ration and the cows ate it.” The research has prompted multiple groups to implement seaweed into their carbon reduction programs.
