According to Kansas Wheat Commission CEO Justin Gilpin, the state’s wheat harvest is finally wrapping up. “This has definitely been one of the more challenging years that we’ve had in the Southern Plains for hard red winter wheat. It was not just the growing conditions with drought when it was planted, but the rain switched on at harvest.” According to the USDA, Kansas wheat production has not been this low since 1965. “Even though planted wheat acres were higher last fall, abandonment is at levels we haven’t seen in decades.”
