Farmers are anxious to get into the field for spring planting. NorthStar Genetics soybean production manager Alan Muhs is urging patience. “Don’t rush through the planting season. Execute the plan you’ve made and many times that’ll help put a few more bushels in your pocket.” To be successful, Muhs recommends farmers focus on variety selection. Muhs likes to see corn seeded at depths of two-to-two-and-a-half inches. In a late-plant situation, farmers like to get soybeans out of the ground quickly and shallow-up planting depth. That may not be the best strategy. “Even in May, we’re not out of the realm of finding sub-50 degree temperatures. That little bit of topsoil insulates the seed from taking in cold temperatures.” NorthStar Genetics is promoting five ways to increase yield without reducing costs. That list includes variety selection, planting dates, seedbed preparation, planting depth and seed spacing.
