There’s no shortage of agriculture related issues being addressed in the Legislature. Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Thom Petersen says these concerns often extend beyond the purview of his department. “It may be issues like property taxes, school building referendums, the Beginning Farmer Tax Credit, avian influenza and they’re all incredibly important.” Petersen is closely watching the legislation dealing with the Minnesota Board of Animal Health. “The issue is if we’re going to grow the Board of Animal Health. It’s currently at six, but it was at five members for about 100 years. My concern is making sure we have a board that understands farming, agriculture and animal diseases.”
