The Wholestone Farms meat packing plant that’s planned to build in Sioux Falls may be blocked because of a new initiative on the ballot. A measure put on the November ballot allows Sioux Falls voters to decide if they want another meatpacking facility within city limits. South Dakota Pork Producers Council Executive Director Glenn Muller says voting ‘yes’ on the ballot measure could block the development and send the wrong message to the industry. “We have concerns that the measure sets a terrible precedent. So long as meat processors adhere to the zoning ordinances, there should not be an initiative measure that stops businesses from building.” Muller says the development of a new pork processing plant could expand the market for local producers. “We need additional shackle space in the area. This particular plant’s stakeholders will be producers that supply the hogs.”
