In the first year of its carbon program, Land O’Lakes made more than $4 million in cash payments to participating farmers. Truterra, which is Land O’Lakes’ sustainability business, sequestered over 200,000 metric tons of carbon. The cash payments averaged $20,000 per farmer. Those participating in 2022 may be eligible for a one-time, upfront payment of $20 per ton of carbon. That payment will be based on a change in farming practices, such as a reduction in tillage or the addition of cover crops.
