The full sugarbeet harvest campaign is delayed in North Dakota due to the warmer conditions. Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative Vice President of Agriculture and Research Mike Metzger says there’s a lot of risk putting sugarbeets in long-term storage when temps are higher than the mid-50s. “Management made the final decision to delay harvest another week. We’ll take a look for opportunities to have six to eight hour windows in which we can pile sugarbeets, but Mother Nature isn’t going to provide them this week. Hopefully, this weekend we can get something out.” Metzger says if the warmer-than-usual conditions continue into mid-October, the risks will change. “We know it takes 14 days to harvest and freezing temperatures could happen anytime. At that point, we’ll explore all options for a modified harvest. As we get closer to next week, we’ll have more concrete plans.”
