U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He met virtually on Friday to discuss trade relations. In a statement after the meeting, the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office said the two sides understand the importance of this trade relationship. The progress made on the phase one trade deal was discussed and there was an agreement to continue the dialogue on “certain outstanding issues.” No other details were given, but Tai has emphasized China has not lived up to its commitments under the trade agreement. Tai outlined the path forward in a presentation for a Washington, D.C. think tank earlier in the week, starting with the enforcement of the phase one trade deal. “China made commitments that benefit certain American industries, including agriculture, that we must enforce. President Biden will continue to promote our economic interests and build confidence for American industries.” Tai said the administration will start a targeted tariff exclusion process.
