The nominee for chief agriculture negotiator at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, Elaine Trevino, is still awaiting confirmation. Trevino is the current president of the Almond Association of California. National Potato Council CEO Kam Quarles says it’s good to have someone who understands specialty crops. “A lot of the issues are going to be similar between specialty and program crops, but then, there are nuances. Specialty crops are special for a reason. Some of the things that prevent specialty crop exports around the world are slightly different than program crops. We’re supportive of her quick confirmation.” Quarles is also waiting on another trade position. “We’re interested to see who they’ll put forward for the Under Secretary of Trade at the USDA. That position would work closely with Trevino once confirmed. It’s good that the trade team is taking shape, because there are a lot of trade issues.”
