As crops begin to mature, the stress from drought may appear as the crop dries down. Pioneer Field Agronomist Kristie Sundeen says be aware of stalk issues in your corn. “I was out looking at fields and there are stalk quality issues. Fusarium is setting in. It honestly depends on the hybrid and how it handled the drought. The best thing farmers can do is walk the fields and do the push test. Farmers can push the stalks on the side and if the stalks go over, farmers need to watch the fields.” Corn that had pollination issues will also have ear drop issues, especially in lower yielding corn. “The fields where there was pollination issues, farmers need to be out early to harvest them quickly.” Hear the story.
